What is Goal-Setting Theory?

The goal setting theory is an amazing theory which motivates people to complete their work and achieve different targets but, what exactly is the meaning of this theory?

The blog will provide you with a basic understanding of the goal setting theory and how it motivates people.

Understanding the Goal-Setting Theory

The goal-setting theory was put forward by American psychologist Edwin Locke which states that people tend to work better when they have goals set for themselves. Individuals who set specific difficult goals for themselves, perform better than the people who have created simple and easy goals for themselves.

Locke mentioned five basic principles that people need to consider when they are setting goals for themselves which are: clarity, commitment, feedback, challenge and task complexity. People need to consider the type and the quality of any goal that they are setting for themselves and how it will affect their work before creating any target for themselves.

It is also important to be clear in your goals as you simply cannot put forward a vague goal as it will not motivate you however, if you are creating specific and organised goals for yourself then, you will feel more motivated to achieve the target that you have put forward for yourself.
