Regarding the Difference between fiction and nonfiction

Whether you are a reader or a writer, sometimes it might be difficult for you to decide which book is fiction and which one is non-fiction. You must go through this blog if you have any confusion regarding the difference between fiction and nonfiction. So, without wasting much time, let’s begin!

Difference between Fiction and Non-fiction

In simple terms, Fiction means an imaginative plot where the setting, characters, and other things are created from the imagination of the writer. On the other hand, Non-fiction is based on the events that actually happened and consists of factual stories and real people.

However, many times you’ll find that the line of difference between the two genres gets blurred as these two often get intersected. Fiction and Non-fiction genre is used in several mediums be it a book, a film, a play or some TV show. But in this blog, we will be taking the difference between both genres, particularly in literature.

Fiction - What is it?

Fiction is solely created on the imagination of the author and includes novels, myths, legends, short stories, fairy tales, etc. Even though the setting and characters are from the fiction world, writers sometimes use real-life events to add some jumping-off points in their narrative.

For example, Stephen King sets his novels and stories in the fictional world of Maine, Derry, etc. The towns he uses in this story is based on his actual hometown, Bangor. You’ll find a lot of similarities in the topography of Bangor and the fictional towns in Stephen King’s stories and novels.

Non-Fiction - What is it?

Contrasting Fiction, Non-fiction does not work on any imagination but on factual points, reports and true events. Journalism, essays, biographies and histories are often classified as non-fiction. Sometimes, there are some fabrications in a non-fiction story, but it does not make the story lose its credibility as a non-fiction piece of work.

You can try reading, ‘In Cold Blood’ which is an amazing piece of work a non-fiction story. Even though it is sometimes difficult to pinpoint differences between the two genres, if the work reports truth it is nothing but non-fiction.
